Chevening is the UK government’s flagship international scholarship — fully funded, covers any Masters at any UK university, and comes with a network of 50,000+ alumni in leadership positions in 160 countries. It is also competitive: roughly 1,700 awards per year from over 65,000 applicants. This guide covers the full 2026 application process, what the selection committee actually looks for, and how to write a winning application.

The four Chevening essays
The Chevening application requires four 500-word essays. These are the core of the selection process — not your academic transcript. The essays are:
- Leadership and influence — give a specific example of when you led or influenced others. Not “I have leadership potential” — an actual story with measurable outcome.
- Networking — demonstrate that you understand the value of the Chevening alumni network and have a track record of building professional relationships strategically.
- Study in the UK — why this specific Masters, at these specific universities, at this point in your career. Must be specific: name the modules, the professors, the research clusters.
- Career plan — credible 5–10 year plan that shows how this Masters and the UK experience feeds directly into impact in your home country.
Common mistakes: generic essays that could apply to any scholarship; essays about why you want to travel to the UK (irrelevant — Chevening is about leadership impact); failing to name specific university modules or professors.
What the selection committee looks for
Chevening selects for one profile: someone who will be a leader in their country or field within 10 years and will maintain a positive relationship with the UK. The committee is not looking for the most academically distinguished applicant — it is looking for the most likely future ambassador, minister, CEO, or civil society leader. Evidence of leadership is weighted more heavily than GPA.
Sectors that consistently produce successful Chevening applicants: journalism, public policy, civil society/NGO, government, medicine (public health specifically), law, and education leadership. Pure academic researchers are less successful unless the research has clear real-world policy applications.
Choosing your three UK universities
You must list three UK universities in your application and have three unconditional offers by the deadline. Strategy: (1) apply to one “reach” institution (Oxford, LSE, UCL); (2) apply to one “match” institution (Warwick, Edinburgh, Exeter); (3) apply to one “safety” institution you are confident of getting an offer from. All three should offer the same or closely related program — changing your field of study mid-application is a red flag.
FAQ
Can US citizens apply for Chevening?
No — the US is not on the Chevening eligible countries list. Chevening is designed for countries where UK foreign policy has strategic interests, generally in the developing world and Commonwealth. US students should look at the Marshall Scholarship (US-specific, for study in the UK) or Rhodes Scholarship (Oxford specifically).
How competitive is Chevening?
Roughly 65,000–70,000 applications are received annually for approximately 1,700 awards — an acceptance rate of around 2.5%. However, competition varies enormously by country: smaller eligible countries have fewer applicants and proportionally more awards. India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Kenya are among the most competitive. If you are from a smaller country with fewer than 500 applicants, your odds improve significantly.
Can I reapply if I’m rejected?
Yes — there is no limit on applications. Many successful Chevening scholars applied 2–3 times. The key is to get feedback from your British embassy after rejection (some will provide it) and address the specific weakness in the next application. Most reapplicants who succeed between their first and third attempt do so by strengthening their leadership evidence and making their career plan more concrete.
