Spain in 2026: visas, money, weather, and the real cost of moving
Updated May 2026
From Barcelona’s Modernisme to a small village in Andalucia, Spain rewards slow travel and rewards moving in even more — if you understand the visa landscape and the real costs. Below, every guide we have on Spain, plus what we wish someone had told us before we started the paperwork.
The essentials
| Best time to visit | May–June and September–October. Peak summer (July/August) is hot inland and crowded on the coast. |
| Visa for non-EU | Digital nomad visa, non-lucrative visa, or student visa — each has different income proofs and timelines. |
| Money setup | NIE first, then bank account. BBVA, Santander, CaixaBank, or N26 each have tradeoffs for foreigners. |
| Average rent | €800–€1,400/month for a one-bed in Madrid or Barcelona; €500–€800 in Valencia, Seville, or Malaga. |
