Bali B211A visa 2026: 60 days, extensions, KITAS pathway explained

The B211A is Bali’s most flexible long-stay tourist visa. With extensions, you can stay 6 months. Combined with the new E33G digital nomad visa announced for 2024-25, Indonesia is one of Asia’s most accessible long-term destinations.

B211A overview

  • Initial validity: 60 days from arrival in Indonesia
  • Extensions: 2 extensions of 60 days each = max 180 days (6 months) total
  • Cost: approximately $130 USD initial application + $40 per extension
  • Eligibility: 80+ countries (US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, NZ, most Asian + Latin American countries)
  • Single entry: if you leave Indonesia, you need a new visa. Cannot re-enter on same B211A
  • Cannot be converted to work visa in Indonesia. Must leave + apply for new visa for work permission

Sponsor requirement (the catch)

B211A applications require an Indonesian sponsor. Two ways:

  • Travel agent / visa service: most common path. Indonesian visa agencies sponsor your application for $50-150 service fee. Examples: Bali Indo Visa, Cekindo, Emerhub
  • Indonesian citizen sponsor: if you have a friend/family/business contact in Indonesia willing to sign as sponsor
  • Hotel sponsor: some larger hotels offer sponsor service if you book 60+ days

Application process

Two main routes: e-VOA on arrival, or pre-application from your home country.

Route 1: Apply pre-arrival via Indonesian e-Visa portal

  • Where: molina.imigrasi.go.id (official) or via authorized agent
  • Documents: passport scan, photos, sponsor letter, proof of funds ($2,000+ typical), return ticket, accommodation booking
  • Cost: ~$130 USD (visa fee) + $50-150 (agent fee if used)
  • Timeline: 5-14 working days
  • Visa issued: by email; print + carry on arrival

Route 2: Apply at Indonesian embassy in your country

Pre-COVID standard. Now less common but still works. Embassy in your country can issue B211A. Allow 2-4 weeks.

Extending the B211A in Bali

60 days isn’t usually enough for serious travelers. Extension process:

  • When to apply: 1-2 weeks before initial 60-day expiry
  • Where: Bali Imigrasi office (Denpasar) or via your sponsor agent
  • Documents: passport, photos, application form, fee
  • Cost: ~$40 + agent fee ($30-80)
  • Timeline: 5-7 working days. Allow buffer time
  • Two extensions max: at end of 6 months total, you must leave Indonesia

What you can and cannot do on B211A

B211A is a tourist/visit visa, not a work visa. Officially:

  • Cannot work for Indonesian companies or earn income from Indonesian sources
  • Can work remotely for foreign clients/employers (gray area, technically tolerated for remote workers)
  • Can attend conferences, business meetings, training
  • Can study informally (yoga, surfing, cooking classes)
  • Cannot enroll in formal education (separate student visa needed)

The Indonesian government has been increasingly tolerant of digital nomads working on B211A while based in Bali, but technically working from Indonesia (even for foreign employers) is in legal gray area. The 2024 E33G digital nomad visa formally addresses this.

Transitioning to KITAS (limited stay permit)

If you want to stay longer than 6 months, options:

  • Exit + return on new B211A: simplest. Leave Indonesia (Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand are short flights), apply for new visa, return
  • KITAS via investment visa (E28A): $25,000+ investment in Indonesian business
  • KITAS via marriage: if married to Indonesian citizen
  • KITAS via skilled work permit (B311/IMTA): requires Indonesian employer sponsor
  • Second Home Visa: 5 or 10-year visa for those with $130K USD in Indonesian bank account
  • E33G Digital Nomad Visa: 5-year visa announced 2024-25, requires $60K USD/year income proof, $2K USD bank deposit

Cost of living in Bali on B211A

Bali pricing has risen 30-50% since 2020. Realistic budgets:

  • Backpacker: $700-1,000/month. Hostel dorm or basic guesthouse, warungs (local restaurants), motorbike rental
  • Mid-range nomad: $1,200-2,000/month. Private apartment, mix of restaurants, scooter, coworking 2 days/week
  • Comfortable expat: $2,500-4,000/month. Villa with pool, private chef occasional, full coworking, regular nights out
  • Luxury: $5,000+/month. High-end villa, full-time staff, premium dining

Where to base in Bali

  • Canggu: digital nomad capital. Coworking spaces, surf, cafes, beach. Crowded + traffic since 2022
  • Ubud: wellness + yoga focus. Quieter, jungle setting. Less infrastructure for working
  • Sanur: family-friendly, calmer beaches, growing nomad scene
  • Uluwatu: world-class surfing, dramatic cliff vistas, more remote
  • Pererenan / Berawa: quieter than Canggu but close enough. Growing scene
  • Kuta/Seminyak: tourist + party focus. Not recommended for serious work

Practical first-month checklist

  • Open Indonesian bank account: not strictly necessary for short stays. BCA most foreigner-friendly. KITAS holders only
  • Indonesian SIM: Telkomsel, XL Axiata. ~$10-20 for 30 days/30GB. Buy at airport
  • Motorbike rental: 1.0M-1.5M IDR/month ($65-100). Always wear helmet (legally required + safety)
  • International driver permit: required if police stop you. Get from your country before travel ($20-30)
  • Health insurance: mandatory recommendation. Bali medical can cost $5K-50K for serious incidents. SafetyWing minimum
  • Coworking membership: Outpost ($150-250/month), Tropical Nomad ($120-180), Dojo Bali ($150-220), B Work ($100-180)

Common mistakes B211A holders make

  • Overstaying the 60-day initial period: $100/day fines. Apply for extension 1-2 weeks early
  • Missing extension deadline: 2 weeks before expiry minimum. Bali Imigrasi has slow processing
  • Working for Indonesian employer on B211A: illegal. Risk of fines + deportation
  • Not registering at local kelurahan (village office): required within 24 hours of moving to a new accommodation. Often ignored but technically required
  • Driving without IDP + helmet: Bali traffic police regularly stop tourists
  • Not budgeting for visa runs: $200-400 every 6 months for new visa application
