Things to do in Bali: Canggu, Ubud, Uluwatu, Sanur — what each offers

Bali isn’t one destination — it’s 6+ very distinct sub-regions. Trying to do all in 5 days is impossible. Here’s the 7-day plan that works, plus what each neighborhood actually offers.

Day-by-day 7-day Bali itinerary

Days 1-2: Canggu (digital nomad capital)

  • Surf at Echo Beach or Berawa: rentals 50,000-100,000 IDR/day. Lessons 200,000-400,000 IDR/hour
  • Brunch at La Brisa or Old Man’s: Insta-popular, 100,000-200,000 IDR/meal
  • Sunset at Old Man’s or Tropical Temple: live music, beach vibe
  • Cafes/coworking: Outpost, Tropical Nomad, Dojo Bali, Crate Cafe (best digital nomad coffee scene)
  • Skip: Berawa traffic 4-7pm. Get around on motorbike (50,000-70,000 IDR/day rental)

Days 3-4: Ubud (cultural + wellness center)

  • Tegalalang Rice Terraces: classic Bali postcard. Best 6-9am to avoid crowds. 30,000 IDR entry
  • Sacred Monkey Forest: 80,000 IDR. Watch your belongings — monkeys steal sunglasses, hats, snacks
  • Yoga classes: Yoga Barn (Bali’s most famous), Radiantly Alive, Ubud Yoga Centre. 130,000-180,000 IDR/class
  • Cooking classes: Paon Bali, Ubud Casa Luna. 350,000-450,000 IDR for half-day
  • Tegenungan Waterfall: 30 min drive. 20,000 IDR entry. Best morning
  • Pyramid of Chi sound healing: 250,000-450,000 IDR per session

Day 5: Uluwatu (cliffs + surf + sunsets)

  • Uluwatu Temple at sunset: 50,000 IDR. Kecak fire dance at 6pm (extra 100,000 IDR)
  • Surfing Padang Padang or Suluban: world-class waves for advanced surfers
  • Single Fin / Ulu Cliffhouse beach club: sunset cocktails 100,000-200,000 IDR
  • Stay in Uluwatu vs day trip from Canggu: if you have time, 1-2 nights in Uluwatu cliff villas worth it
  • Skip: the touristy souvenir shops near temple

Day 6: Mount Batur sunrise hike

  • 2am pickup, summit by 6am: volcanic crater, sunrise over Lombok
  • Cost: 350,000-600,000 IDR depending on tour quality
  • Difficulty: moderate (2 hours up, 1.5 hours down). Bring layers — cold at top
  • Combine with: Tirta Empul holy water temple + Tegalalang on return

Day 7: Sanur or beach day in Nusa Dua

End trip relaxing. Sanur has chill family beaches, calm water, sunrise views (since east coast). Nusa Dua has manicured resort beaches if you want luxury hotel pool day.

Bali by sub-region: which to base in

Canggu — best for digital nomads

  • Vibe: Digital nomad capital. Cafes, coworking, surf, beach clubs
  • Pros: Excellent infrastructure for working, robust expat community, healthy food scene
  • Cons: Traffic chaos 4-7pm, increasingly crowded, lost some of its laid-back charm
  • Stay: Berawa, Pererenan (quieter alternatives to Canggu Beach proper)

Ubud — best for wellness + culture

  • Vibe: Yoga, spirituality, art, jungle living
  • Pros: Rich cultural scene, healing arts, exceptional dining, jungle setting
  • Cons: Inland (no beach), traffic on main streets, tourist saturation in central Ubud
  • Stay: Penestanan (artists’ colony), Sayan (rice fields), Tegallalang (more remote)

Uluwatu — best for surfers + clifftop luxe

  • Vibe: World-class surf, dramatic cliffs, sunset culture
  • Pros: Less crowded than Canggu, stunning beaches, premium beach clubs
  • Cons: Spread out (need motorbike/car), expensive for daily living
  • Stay: Bingin Beach, Padang Padang, Pecatu (cliff villas)

Sanur — best for families + chill

  • Vibe: Calm family-friendly resort town. East coast = sunrise views
  • Pros: Less party scene, calmer beach, growing nomad scene, excellent for kids
  • Cons: Quieter (some find boring), fewer late-night options
  • Stay: Sanur Beach proper, Renon (residential)

Seminyak — best for nightlife + trendy beach clubs

  • Vibe: Trendy beach clubs, fashion shopping, nightlife
  • Pros: Excellent restaurants, KU DE TA + Potato Head beach clubs
  • Cons: Tourist trap pricing, shallow Insta-bro vibe, expensive
  • Stay: Seminyak Beach area, Petitenget

Kuta — what to expect (and probably skip)

Kuta is the original tourist beach but has degenerated. Massive crowds, aggressive vendors, mediocre dining, party scene catered to Australian backpacker stereotypes. Skip unless you want the chaos experience.

Day trips from Bali

  • Nusa Penida (1-day boat tour): Kelingking Beach, Angel’s Billabong, Crystal Bay. 1.5M IDR/person for full-day boat tour
  • Lombok (overnight): Pink Beach, Senggigi, Mt Rinjani trek. 1-2 hour ferry
  • Gili Islands (overnight): Gili Trawangan (party), Gili Air (chill), Gili Meno (couples). Boat from Padang Bai
  • Munduk waterfalls + lakes (full day): Twin Lakes (Buyan + Tamblingan), Munduk Waterfall, Banyumala Waterfall. Cooler temperatures (1,000m altitude)
  • East Bali (Sidemen + Amed): rice terraces, snorkeling, less touristy. 2-day overnight

Practical Bali tips

  • Always negotiate: taxis, market prices, even some restaurants accept negotiation. Don’t pay first asked price
  • Avoid Bluebird Taxis Premium scams: unscrupulous taxis use ‘Bluebird’ name without being real Bluebird. Real Bluebird has logo + driver ID. Use Grab/Gojek instead
  • Get your own scooter: Grab/Gojek work but expensive for full days. Scooter rental 50,000-70,000 IDR/day. Always wear helmet
  • Cash for street food, card for upscale: ATMs at all 7-11s. Withdraw 1-2 million IDR ($65-130) at a time to amortize ATM fees
  • Be respectful at temples: sarong + sash mandatory. Many temples lend them
  • Ceremonial days: Bali has many religious holidays. Nyepi (Day of Silence, March) is unique — entire island shuts down 24 hours
  • Health: bottled water only. Avoid ice in non-tourist areas. Get travel insurance

Bali common mistakes

  • Trying to see all of Bali in 3-4 days: impossible. Pick 2-3 sub-regions and explore each properly
  • Staying only in Kuta/Seminyak: missing the real Bali. Spread your time across regions
  • Not booking villa with pool ahead: rates double in dry season (May-October). Book 6+ weeks early
  • Driving without IDP: police regularly stop tourists. International Driving Permit + helmet mandatory
  • Drinking from open buckets at parties: spiked drinks are real. Stick to sealed bottles or where you watch the pour
  • Leaving valuables in scooter compartment: theft common at beaches. Bring small bag with passport + cash
  • Not budgeting for visa runs: if staying 6+ months, plan extension trips. Visa runs cost 200,000-400,000 IDR

Best time to visit Bali

  • April-October (dry season): ideal weather, lower humidity, best for surfing
  • November-March (rainy season): daily afternoon rains, lower prices, lush green landscapes
  • Avoid Christmas + New Year: peak prices, full hotels
  • Best months: May, June, September — sweet spot of weather + crowds + prices
