Portugal in 2026: D7 and DR visas, the NIF maze, and what’s actually changed

Portugal isn’t the bargain it was in 2020, but it’s still one of the most accessible long-stay options in Europe — if you read the visa requirements carefully and budget for the NIF and SEF (now AIMA) wait times.
The essentials
| D7 vs DR | D7 is for passive income (pensions, dividends, rents). DR (Digital Nomad) is for remote employment income. |
| NIF first | You can get a NIF without flying via fiscal representative — usually €100–€200 and 2 weeks. |
| Where to live | Lisbon and Porto are saturated. Coimbra, Setúbal, Aveiro, and the Silver Coast offer cheaper rents and shorter waits. |
| Healthcare | SNS access requires residency and CRUE/CRNN registration. Private insurance fills the gap. |
