Portugal in 2026: D7 and DR visas, the NIF maze, and what’s actually changed

Updated May 2026

Portugal isn’t the bargain it was in 2020, but it’s still one of the most accessible long-stay options in Europe — if you read the visa requirements carefully and budget for the NIF and SEF (now AIMA) wait times.

The essentials

D7 vs DRD7 is for passive income (pensions, dividends, rents). DR (Digital Nomad) is for remote employment income.
NIF firstYou can get a NIF without flying via fiscal representative — usually €100–€200 and 2 weeks.
Where to liveLisbon and Porto are saturated. Coimbra, Setúbal, Aveiro, and the Silver Coast offer cheaper rents and shorter waits.
HealthcareSNS access requires residency and CRUE/CRNN registration. Private insurance fills the gap.
