Portugal’s peak season (July–August) doubles hotel rates and packs the Algarve with sunbathers. The shoulder months are dramatically better. Here’s the honest 2026 month-by-month for Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve.

The short answer
Best overall: late April to mid-June, and mid-September to mid-October. Mild weather (Lisbon 18–25°C), manageable crowds, hotel prices 30–50% lower than peak summer. Avoid the Algarve in August unless you’re specifically going for the beach club scene.
Month-by-month
- January – February: Coldest, wettest. Lisbon 8–15°C, frequent rain. Cheapest period. Pousadas often discounted 50%. Best for: cultural Lisbon/Porto, no beach.
- March: Wildflowers, fewer crowds. Lisbon 11–18°C. Easter (April 5, 2026) creates a brief spike.
- April – early May: The first sweet spot. 14–22°C, comfortable for everything except swimming. Highly recommended.
- Late May – June: Peak quality-to-price. 18–25°C, sea warm enough to swim, crowds still light, prices moderate.
- July – August: Hot. Lisbon 26–31°C; Algarve hotter and packed. Hotel rates 60–120% above shoulder. The Festas dos Santos (Lisbon, June 12–13 traditionally; Porto, June 23–24) is the year’s biggest event.
- September: Crowds drop sharply. Sea is at its warmest (24°C). Outstanding window through October 15.
- October – November: Wine harvest season, especially the Douro Valley (Porto). Cool but pleasant. Rain begins building.
- December: Lisbon & Porto Christmas markets. Cheapest period of the year except for the week between Christmas and New Year.
By region
Lisbon
Year-round destination. Best: April–June, September–October. Avoid: late July through mid-August. Lisbon’s heat, combined with cruise day-trippers, makes the Alfama and Belém unpleasantly crowded in peak.
Porto + Douro Valley
Best: May, June, September, October. The wine harvest in late September makes the Douro Valley genuinely magical — book Quinta tours 4–6 weeks ahead. Avoid: November–March for outdoor activities (rain).
The Algarve
Beach destination. Best: late June through mid-July, then September. August is brutally crowded; June and September water is warm enough. Off-season (November–March) much of the Algarve infrastructure shuts down.
Madeira
Year-round destination with subtropical climate. Best: April, May, September, October for hiking. New Year’s Eve fireworks in Funchal are world-famous (book 3+ months ahead).
Festivals to plan around (or avoid)
- Festas dos Santos Populares: Lisbon June 12–13 (Santo António), Porto June 23–24 (São João). Spectacular street parties.
- NOS Alive Festival: Lisbon, July. Major music festival.
- Wine harvest: Late September in Douro. Bookable tours.
- Lisbon Marathon: Mid-October. Hotels fill up.

Final practical advice
Plan your timing carefully — many of the costs and complexities described above can be reduced significantly with even basic advance preparation. Researching 2-3 months ahead of any major commitment, asking questions of people who have already been through the process, and giving yourself buffer time for the inevitable surprises will save you both money and stress.
