Japan in 2026 is the cheapest it’s been for foreign visitors in 30 years (the yen). It’s also the most crowded — Kyoto in cherry blossom season is full. Here’s how to plan a real trip, when to go, and the working holiday visa if you want to stay.

The essentials

First trip itineraryTokyo (3) → Hakone (1) → Kyoto (3) → Osaka (2) → Tokyo. JR Pass paid off until October 2023; now do point-to-point Shinkansen.
Cherry blossom seasonLast week of March in Tokyo, first week of April in Kyoto. Book hotels 6 months out.
Working holiday visa12 months for under-30s from 30+ countries (Australia, UK, Canada, Korea, Germany, France, etc.). US not eligible.
CostsMid-range: ¥18,000–¥25,000/day per person. Budget: ¥10,000–¥14,000 with hostels and konbini meals.
