Japan visa guide 2026: work, digital nomad, retirement and long-stay options

Japan was historically one of the most closed countries for foreign long-stay residents. Since 2021 that has changed substantially — a new digital nomad visa, relaxed skilled worker requirements, and actively expanded PR pathways. Here is the complete picture for 2026.

Japan’s Digital Nomad Visa (2024)

Japan launched its Digital Nomad Visa in 2024 — a 6-month visa for remote workers employed by companies outside Japan. Key requirements: annual income of JPY 10,000,000 (approximately USD 67,000 or GBP 53,000) from foreign sources, valid health insurance, and proof of remote employment. The income threshold is the highest of any digital nomad visa in Asia.

The visa is not extendable from inside Japan — you must exit after 6 months and may reapply from outside. No Japanese language requirement. Eligible nationalities are those with bilateral agreements with Japan — currently most Western countries including UK, US, EU, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Family members can accompany the visa holder as dependents.

Highly Skilled Professional (HSP) — Japan’s fast-track route

Japan’s Highly Skilled Professional visa uses a points-based system to attract high-value foreign workers and researchers. Points are awarded for academic qualifications (up to 30 points for doctoral degree), professional experience (up to 15 points), annual salary (20 points for JPY 30,000,000+, 10 points for JPY 10,000,000), age (15 points under 30), Japanese language ability (15 points for N1 JLPT), and specific bonus categories (innovation business, Japanese university graduates, certain academic fields).

70+ points qualifies for HSP-1 status: a 5-year residence permit, ability to sponsor a spouse and parents for residence, 3 additional household staff permissions. 80+ points gives HSP-2 status: eligible for permanent residence after just 1 year (versus the usual 10 years for standard work visa holders).

Working Holiday — the accessible first step

Japan’s Working Holiday visa is available for citizens of countries with bilateral agreements: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, UK, and others. Age limit is typically 18 to 30 (Ireland gets up to 35). The visa allows a 1-year stay with the right to work — up to 6 months for any single employer. This is a commonly used ‘try before you commit’ route for those considering Japan long-term. Working holiday cannot be renewed, but some holders transition to work visas if they find sponsoring employers during their stay.

Standard work visa routes

Japan’s most common long-term work visa categories include: Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services (for IT professionals, engineers, and business roles requiring specialised knowledge), Skilled Labor (for traditional Japanese crafts, chefs of specific cuisines), and Intra-Company Transferee (for employees of multinational companies transferred to Japanese operations). All require a Japanese employer to sponsor and file the Certificate of Eligibility (COE) with the Immigration Services Agency of Japan before the applicant applies at a Japanese consulate abroad.

The 10-year route to permanent residency

Standard permanent residency (Eijusha) requires 10 consecutive years of legal residence in Japan, with 5 of those years in work or marriage status. The HSP fast-track cuts this to 1 to 3 years depending on points score. During the 10 years, you must not leave Japan for more than 100 days per year (long absences reset the residency clock). PR gives the right to live and work in Japan indefinitely in any profession, with no renewal requirements. Japanese citizenship is separate and requires renouncing other nationalities.

Japanese language — how important?

For most work visas: no language requirement, though employers typically expect business-level Japanese for client-facing roles. For HSP: JLPT N1 adds 15 points to your score. For Specified Skilled Worker: a Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4 is the minimum. For daily life: Japan has excellent infrastructure for non-Japanese speakers in Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka, but outside major cities English is limited and Japanese is functionally essential.

Japan’s 2021 to 2026 immigration opening has been genuine but its bureaucracy has not simplified at the same pace. Sponsor employers must navigate significant paperwork through the Immigration Services Agency. Use a Japanese immigration scrivener (gyosei shoshi) if self-sponsoring or working with a smaller employer — they handle the COE application and significantly reduce processing delays.

Tax residency in Japan

If you stay in Japan for more than 1 year (or have an intention to stay permanently), you become a Japanese tax resident. Japan taxes residents on worldwide income — there is no territorial tax system. Japan has double-taxation treaties with most Western countries to prevent dual taxation. Income tax in Japan is progressive: 5 percent to 45 percent national + 10 percent local (inhabitant tax). Digital Nomad Visa holders staying under 6 months typically do not trigger Japanese tax residency.
